Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

  |   Aaron School, Elementary School, News, Special Programs

Hispanic Heritage Month takes place every year in the United States between September 15th and October 15th. This is a time where we recognize and honor the culture and contributions of people from Latin American and Spanish descent. Elementary school students at Aaron School 45th street had the opportunity to celebrate through music!

K-2 students explored instruments commonly used in Latin Music – congas, bongos, maracas, güiros, claves and more! Musicians learned a catchy musical refrain to accompany the book Off We Go to Mexico (An Adventure in the Sun) by Laurie Krebs and Christopher Corr. They also sang the traditional folk song En la pulga de San José, a music and movement song about finding instruments at a flea market, and did The Mexican Hat Dance, considered by many to be the national dance of Mexico. Students enjoyed their exploration into Latin Music and dancing along to the beat!

Students in grades 3-5 practiced their Spanish while singing Oye (Are You Listening?), an upbeat song that New York-based children’s composer, Jose Papoulis, co-wrote with children from an inner-city school in Acapulco, Mexico. They added choreographed movements and discussed the inspiring message behind the song: that young people deserve to dream, pursue opportunities, and have their voices be heard. Students appreciated learning some new Spanish words and creating movements that followed along with the tune of the music!

Oye! Are you listening?
Oye! Can you hear them calling?
Oye! We are calling to you
